About Mister Scrap Metal
Mr. Scrap Metal is a one-man business, based in Zaltbommel (The Netherlands). I build scrap metal art objects. For example from car parts, bicycle chains, and cutlery. You will see those materials most in my works. But basically, I use every material that I come across. I work alone and everything is made at home, in my tiny shed.
I often make special things. Think of a moving bottle crate, a children's cargo bike (now used as a planter), a mini boat, a go-kart with a scooter engine, a mini chopper... I probably build anything you can think of.
But every time, pieces of metal remained. Some of them bigger than others, but most of them were just not good enough for my next project. That is a shame because it probably would've ended up at the scrapyard.
And then I came across a video of someone who made objects from old pieces of material. A new idea was formed, but it seemed impossible. I went into my shed and grabbed some materials because I wanted to give it a try. And it worked.
How it's made
I do everything by heart. I don't look for drawings, I hardly use photos of an object as an example. When the idea comes, I just start building and shape it along the way.
Every product is unique. Even if I remake exactly the same thing, it always turns out different. I make the objects from the materials that I have in stock. It's really challenging to form loose materials into one sculpture. Sometimes I start with one idea, but eventually, it becomes something completely different. That's why it's impossible to make a sketch or to give a preview. I give my own twist to everything. I love antiques and vintage, you'll often see that in my work. "Old school." That is my style.
I only do customs (personalized orders) in close consultation. There are several factors that I consider before agreeing on a custom order. For example, I consider if it is achievable for me to make the product. Whether the size can be produced, if the final product will look good, and if I can create the right details in it.
All products are carefully deburred, brushed, and provided with a substantial layer of clear varnish. This prevents rusting and makes the surface feel smoother.
The man behind it all
My name is Robert de Jong. I am a welder by profession. I own a few welding certificates and worked in several companies. But it didn't turn out the way I expected. The workload was way too high. That's why I started my own business.
I am pouring my whole heart and soul into my works of art. They are not just objects. The artworks that I make consist of hours of frustration, mistakes, experiments, and moments of pleasure. And that is what makes Mr. Scrap Metal's products so special.
The art objects of Mr. Scrap Metal are just beautiful decorative pieces that are in your possession. It is a piece of my heart and soul, a piece of my life and my passion for working with metals
